Use effective hourly value, not just the 2,080-hour shortcut

Dividing salary by 2,080 assumes 40 hours a week for 52 weeks. The arithmetic is correct for that assumption, but a job requiring longer weeks has a lower effective hourly value. Paid leave, holidays, bonus probability, health coverage, and retirement contributions can move total compensation in the other direction.

A strong comparison uses a range. Calculate the hourly equivalent at the expected schedule and at a conservative high-workload schedule, then compare the actual benefits and likely net pay. This avoids treating one precise-looking number as the complete value of a job offer.

Worked example

$78,000 salary at two workloads

  • At 40 hours for 52 weeks: $78,000 ÷ 2,080 = $37.50 per hour.
  • At 47 hours for 52 weeks: $78,000 ÷ 2,444 = about $31.91 per hour.
  • The workload assumption changes effective hourly value by about $5.59.

Add paid leave and employer-paid benefits separately before deciding which role has greater total value.

Before you rely on the result

  • Use realistic weekly hours for the specific role.
  • Value paid leave, insurance, retirement match, and expected bonus.
  • Keep commute time and unreimbursed costs visible in the comparison.
  • Run the salary through the paycheck calculator for cash-flow planning.
