Turn an hourly rate into a realistic annual range
The familiar annual conversion—hourly rate multiplied by 40 hours and 52 weeks—assumes 2,080 paid hours. That is useful as a baseline, but it can overstate income when time off is unpaid or hours vary, and it can understate income when overtime, shift differentials, commissions, or bonuses are predictable.
Keep gross conversion separate from take-home pay. Two workers with the same hourly rate can receive different net checks because of filing status, state and local taxes, pre-tax benefits, extra withholding, and pay frequency. Use this page to establish gross compensation, then carry the result into the paycheck calculator with consistent assumptions.
Worked example
$30 per hour with two unpaid weeks
- Weekly baseline: $30 × 40 = $1,200.
- Paid weeks: 50 rather than 52.
- Annual base estimate: $1,200 × 50 = $60,000.
The standard 2,080-hour shortcut would show $62,400, a $2,400 difference before any overtime.
Before you rely on the result
- Replace 40 hours with the schedule you actually expect.
- Reduce paid weeks for unpaid leave or seasonal gaps.
- Add overtime as a separate scenario rather than hiding it in base pay.
- Compare benefits and paid time off when evaluating a salary offer.
