How overtime pay is built
For a typical nonexempt employee covered by the federal Fair Labor Standards Act, overtime is based on the regular rate of pay and hours worked over 40 in a workweek. The calculator keeps regular hours, overtime hours, and the overtime multiplier separate so a user can audit the gross-pay math instead of receiving one unexplained total.
The result is a gross earnings estimate. It does not decide whether a worker is legally entitled to overtime, whether state law uses a daily threshold, or which bonuses and other payments belong in the regular rate. Those questions depend on the job, pay arrangement, jurisdiction, and applicable exemptions.
Worked example
$28 per hour with six overtime hours
- Regular pay: 40 × $28 = $1,120.
- Overtime rate at 1.5×: $28 × 1.5 = $42.
- Overtime pay: 6 × $42 = $252.
Estimated gross pay for the workweek is $1,372 before taxes and deductions.
Before you rely on the result
- Use hours from one defined workweek, not an average across several weeks.
- Confirm the regular rate when bonuses, commissions, or shift differentials apply.
- Check state overtime rules when work occurs outside the federal baseline.
- Use the paycheck calculator afterward to estimate taxes and net pay.
